Lute Olson has compiled a 780-280 career record at Arizona, Iowa, and Long Beach State.

Tucson, AZ - Arizona men’s basketball coach Lute Olson will take an indefinite leave of absence due to a personal matter, his public relations firm announced Sunday.

Olson added that the issue was not health-related, but a matter that required his “undivided attention.” Assistant coach Kevin O’Neill will take over the team in Olson’s place.

“For the past 25 years, I have always given 110 percent to the team and this job,” Olson said. “In light of this personal matter, I feel it is in the best interest of the team and the University of Arizona to take a leave of absence.”

University of Arizona athletics director Jim Livengood confirmed it on Sunday, and said the veteran coach asked for the leave of absence after the school’s football game Saturday.

“Every intention is that he will be back. We will do whatever is in the best interests of (the Olsons),” Livengood said.

Olson, 73, has compiled a 780-280 career record at Arizona, Iowa, and Long Beach State. His 589-187 record with the Wildcats includes the 1997 national championship, four Final Four appearances, 11 Pac-10 titles, and 20 consecutive 20-win seasons. Olson has also won seven Pac-10 Coach of the Year awards.

Arizona is scheduled to open the season November 13 against Northern Arizona.
