College Bowl Game Final & Recap
(Thursday, January 3rd) Final Score: (8) Kansas 24, (5) Virginia Tech 21
Miami, FLÂ - Kansas converted numerous mistakes from Virginia Tech’s two quarterbacks and its own quarterback Todd Reesing tossed and ran for a score, as the eighth-ranked Jayhawks proved they belonged on the national stage with a 24-21 victory over fifth-ranked Virginia Tech in the 74th edition of the Orange Bowl. Kansas’ front seven harassed Sean Glennon and Tyrod Taylor throughout the game and the kick return team struck the final blow in a game filled with momentum-changing special teams efforts. Glennon was intercepted twice — the last by defensive back Justin Thornton just before Reesing’s two-yard TD scamper in the fourth — and Tyrod Taylor had one of his three passes returned 60 yards by Aqib Talib for a score in the first quarter, the first interception return for a touchdown in the Orange Bowl since 1968. The duo combined to complete just 14-of-31 passes for 171 yards. Glennon threw the only touchdown, finding Justin Harper for a 20- yard score late in the fourth. Brandon Ore averaged 5.0 yards per carry with 116 yards on 23 carries, but 11 of those attempts came on one possession, and Tech (11-3) was forced to air it out throughout most of the fourth quarter. Reesing completed 20-of-37 passes for 227 yards with one interception and Brandon McAnderson led the rushing attack with 75 yards. Dexton Fields caught seven passes for 101 yards for Kansas (12-1), which responded after a season- ending loss to Missouri.
