DiPietro questionable against Rangers
New York Islanders goalie Rick DiPietro will see a doctor on Monday for an undisclosed injury and is questionable to play that night against the New York Rangers. DiPietro, who has played in only three games following offseason knee surgery, was injured Saturday night during the first period of the Islanders’ 4-3 home loss to the Carolina Hurricanes. He allowed two goals on 12 shots and didn’t return after the intermission.

Franzen to miss 3-4 weeks with sprained knee
Red Wings forward Johan Franzen will be out for three to four weeks because of a sprained left knee, the team said Sunday. The Detroit left winger damaged the medial collateral ligament during the second period of Saturday night’s 6-5 shootout win over the Chicago Blackhawks. Franzen was injured during a collision with Blackhawks defenseman Brent Sopel in the neutral zone. The Red Wings recalled left wing Ville Leino from Grand Rapids of the AHL.
Ovechkin leaves team to be with grandfather
Alex Ovechkin will miss at least one game while in Russia to spend time with his ailing grandfather. The NHL’s reigning MVP caught a flight home Monday morning and definitely will sit out the Washington Capitals’ game against the visiting Nashville Predators on Tuesday night. The Capitals were not sure when Ovechkin would return to the team. “We know he won’t be here tomorrow,” Capitals spokesman Nate Ewell said Monday. “But we don’t know beyond that.
