Donovan McNabb couldn’t do anything for the Eagles against the stout Ravens defense, throwing for just 59 yards on 8-of-18 passing, with two interceptions and a fumble. Kevin Kolb replaced him at halftime and didn’t fare much better, completing 10-of-23 passes for 73 yards and two interceptions for Philadelphia (5-5-1), which is winless in its last three contests. DeSean Jackson caught five passes for 47 yards. The biggest difference in the game was turnovers, where the Eagles had five, compared to zero for Baltimore.

Final Score: Houston 16, Cleveland 6

Cleveland, OH - Sage Rosenfels threw for 275 yards and a touchdown, leading the Houston Texans to a 16-6 road victory over the Cleveland Browns. Rosenfels completed 24-of-32 passes and threw two interceptions for the Texans (4-7), who won on the road for the first time since November 4, 2007 at Oakland. The win snaps an eight-game road losing streak for Houston. Andre Johnson had 10 catches for 116 yards, while Kevin Walter made seven receptions for 93 yards and a touchdown. Kris Brown hit on 3-of-4 field goals in the victory. Houston completely dominated the football game, holding Cleveland to 240 total yards of offense and 15 first downs. The Texans produced 383 yards of offense and converted 3-of-3 fourth-down plays in the contest. Brady Quinn struggled in his third outing for the Browns (4-7), hitting on only 8-of-18 passes for 94 yards and two interceptions before being replaced by Derek Anderson at the end of the third quarter. Braylon Edwards caught five passes for 85 yards, while Jamal Lewis had 68 total yards in Cleveland’s third loss in four games.

Warrick Dunn had 14 carries for 90 yards and a score while Ronde Barber had two interceptions and returned one of them for a touchdown for the Buccaneers (8-3), who are now tied with Carolina, which lost to Atlanta on Sunday, for first place in the NFC South with the Falcons one game back. Ike Hilliard had two catches for 51 yards and a score, while Cadillac Williams saw his first action since suffering a torn patellar tendon on September 30, 2007 and had 16 carries for 27 yards for Tampa Bay, which has won its last three games. Daunte Culpepper started his third straight game and went just 8-for-20 with 121 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions while Calvin Johnson had three catches for 66 yards and a score for the Lions (0-11), who are faced with the prospect of becoming the first team since the league went to a 16-game format to finish a full season without a win.

Final Score: Minnesota 30, Jacksonville 12

Jacksonville, FL - Adrian Peterson rushed for a touchdown and Ryan Longwell kicked three field goals, as the Minnesota Vikings caged the Jaguars, 30-12, at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium. A battered and bruised Gus Frerotte completed 12-of-20 passes for 120 yards and one interception for the Vikings (6-5), who have won three of their last four games. The veteran signal-caller was on the receiving end of several big hits but managed to stay in the game. David Garrard completed 27-of-45 passes for 317 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions for the disappointing Jaguars (4-7), who have dropped four of their last five games. Final Score: Buffalo 54, Kansas City 31

Edwards finished 24-of-32 for 273 yards, helping the Bills (6-5) snap a four-game slide. Marshawn Lynch rushed for 79 yards and scored a touchdown, while Lee Evans caught five balls for 110 yards. The Bills came within four points of matching their 42-year-old record for most points in a single game. Buffalo recorded 58 points on September 18, 1966 against Miami. Tyler Thigpen struggled under center for the Chiefs (1-10), who have found the win column just once in their past 21 contests dating back to last season. Thigpen completed 17-of-31 passes for 240 yards with three touchdowns and two interceptions. Tony Gonzalez led all receivers with 113 yards on 10 receptions, including a two-yard touchdown. Larry Johnson gained 81 yards on seven carries in defeat.

Final Score: New England 48, Miami 28

Miami, FL - Matt Cassel threw for 415 yards and three touchdowns, leading the New England Patriots to a 48-28 victory over the Miami Dolphins. Randy Moss caught eight passes for 125 yards with three scores for the Patriots (7-4), who put the game away with 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and bounced back nicely from last week’s overtime loss to the Jets. New England remained one game behind New York in the AFC East race, as the Jets won in Tennessee on Sunday to end the Titans’ undefeated season. Cassel, who also ran for a score, completed 30- of-43 passes and became the first Patriots quarterback to reach 400 yards passing in consecutive games. He threw for 400 yards last week against the Jets. Wes Welker also burned his former team for eight catches and 120 yards in the victory, while Kevin Faulk and BenJarvus Green-Ellis added rushing touchdowns. Chad Pennington threw for a career-high 341 yards with three touchdowns and also ran for a score for Miami (6-5), which saw a four-game winning streak come to an end. The Dolphins trounced the Patriots in Week 3 with a 38-13 victory in Foxboro behind five touchdowns from Ronnie Brown, who managed only 37 yards on 10 carries and failed to reach the end zone Sunday.

Final Score: Chicago 27, St. Louis 3

St. Louis, MO - Matt Forte rushed for 132 yards with two touchdowns as the Chicago Bears hammered the St. Louis Rams, 27-3, at the Edward Jones Dome. The Bears, who have split their last six contests, are now tied with Minnesota for first place in the NFC North. The Vikings defeated Jacksonville on Sunday. Jason McKie had a TD catch, while Robbie Gould kicked a pair of field goals in the win. Devin Hester had 115 all-purpose yards for the Bears and Tommie Harris had a pair of sacks to lead the defense. Trent Green finished 16-of-30 for 219 yards with four interceptions in relief of Marc Bulger for the Rams (2-9), who have lost their last five. Bulger completed both of his passes for 11 yards before leaving early in the first quarter with a concussion after being sacked by Adewale Ogunleye, who also had a pair of sacks. Bulger is listed as day-to- day. Torry Holt had four catches for 84 yards, and Josh Brown accounted for the Rams only points with a 43-yard field goal.

Final Score: NY Jets 34, Tennessee 13

Nashville, TN - Brett Favre threw for 224 yards with two touchdowns and Leon Washington ran for a pair of scores, as the New York Jets ended Tennessee’s undefeated season with a 34-13 rout at LP Field. Thomas Jones ran for 96 yards on 27 carries and caught a touchdown pass for the Jets (8-3), who remained atop the AFC East with their fifth straight win. Washington finished with eight carries for 82 yards — 61 coming on a touchdown run in the fourth quarter that essentially put the game away. The Jets punted only once and rolled up 409 yards against a Tennessee defense that was allowing just 281.8 yards per game and had yielded a league-low 13.1 points per contest. Tennessee (10-1) had won 13 straight regular-season games dating back to last year, but managed only 88 yards in the first half and 281 for the game. The Titans finished with only 45 yards rushing. Kerry Collins had thrown five touchdown passes in the past two games, helping the Titans stay unbeaten when opposing defenses focused on the run. He threw just one scoring pass on Sunday and connected on 21-of-39 throws for 243 yards.

Final Score: Oakland 31, Denver 10

Denver, CO - Darren McFadden rushed for a pair of scores and Ashley Lelie added a touchdown catch as the Oakland Raiders surprised the Denver Broncos with a 31-10 win at Invesco Field at Mile High. JaMarcus Russell was effective, completing 10-of-11 passes for 152 yards with one touchdown for the Raiders (3-8), who snapped a four-game losing streak. Justin Fargas rushed for 107 yards on 24 carries, while McFadden had 38 yards on the ground. McFadden’s one-yard touchdown run with 5:26 remaining in the third quarter was Oakland’s first offensive score in 15 quarters of play, a span that covered 206 plays from scrimmage. Lelie had four grabs for 92 yards and Johnnie Lee Higgins returned a punt 89 yards for a score. Jay Cutler struggled, finishing a woeful 16-of-37 for 204 yards with an interception for Denver (6-5), which has dropped four of its last six. Peyton Hillis rushed 17 times for 74 yards and a score for the Broncos.

Final Score: NY Giants 37, Arizona 29

Glendale, AZ - Eli Manning completed 26-of-33 passes for 240 yards and three touchdowns as the New York Giants kept rolling with a 37-29 victory over the Arizona Cardinals. Derrick Ward added 69 yards and a score on 20 carries while kicker John Carney was perfect on four extra points and three field goals. Atlanta, GA - Michael Turner rushed for 117 yards and a career-high four touchdowns, including three in the fourth quarter, as the Atlanta Falcons upended the NFC South-leading Carolina Panthers, 45-28. Matt Ryan was an efficient 17-of-27 for 259 yards for the Falcons (7-4), who have won three of four and moved within a game of the Panthers and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for the top spot in the division. Rookie Harry Douglas ran for a score, caught four balls for 92 yards and had the game-sealing 61-yard punt return for a touchdown with five minutes to play, as Atlanta moved to 5-1 at home this season. Carolina’s Jake Delhomme started slowly but passed for 295 yards and a score on 21-of-35 passes thanks to an eight-catch, 168-yard effort by receiver Steve Smith. The Panthers (8-3), who rushed for a team-record 264 rushing yards against Detroit last week, had 134 yards on the ground while snapping a four-game winning streak. DeAngelo Williams led the running attack with 101 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.

Final Score: Washington 20, Seattle 17

Seattle, WA - Jason Campbell threw for 206 yards and a touchdown, and Shaun Suisham’s 22-yard field goal in the fourth quarter proved to be the deciding points, as the Washington Redskins escaped Qwest Field with a 20-17 win over the Seattle Seahawks. Campbell completed 20-of-33 pass attempts, including an eight-yard TD pass to Antwaan Randle El for Washington (7-4), which began the season 4-1 but had since lost three of five and two straight entering Sunday. Clinton Portis ran for 143 yards on 29 carries despite being a game-time decision for the second straight week due to a sprained MCL in his left knee. Ladell Betts added a rushing touchdown. Matt Hasselbeck was 12-of-24 passing for 103 yards with a pair of TD passes but also two costly interceptions for the Seahawks (2-9), who have lost four straight and seven of their last eight, continuing a disastrous season for a team that has claimed the NFC West title in each of the past four seasons. Maurice Morris totaled 113 yards of offense, with 103 yards rushing and a receiving touchdown, while John Carlson caught a 10-yard score for Seattle, which is now 1-5 at home this season, tied with St. Louis for last place in the NFC West.

Final Score: Indianapolis 23, San Diego 20

San Diego, CA - Adam Vinatieri’s 51-yard field goal with time expiring lifted the Indianapolis Colts to a 23-20 win over the San Diego Chargers in the NFL’s nightcap. San Diego kicker Nate Kaeding made a 47- yarder with 1 1/2 minutes left in the fourth quarter to tie the contest. But the Colts got the ball back and, after moving the ball near midfield, faced a 4th-and-1 after a review ruled them short of a first down by an inch. Indianapolis converted as Peyton Manning completed a 14-yard pass to Marvin Harrison to the Chargers’ 34-yard line, and the Colts called their final timeout with 15 seconds on the clock. Joseph Addai ran for a yard before Manning spiked the ball with two ticks left, and Vinatieri’s kick was good to give the Colts (7-4) their fourth straight win. The Chargers (4-7) have now lost four of five.

 Connecticut 13, South Florida 17

Sun, Nov 23, 2008

TAMPA, Fla. (AP) -South Florida’s swarming defense was every bit as tough as Connecticut’s Donald Brown figured it would be.

The Bulls slowed down the nation’s leading rusher Sunday night, limiting the UConn star to 96 yards on 28 carries and keeping him out of the end zone to end a three-game Big East losing streak with a 17-13 victory.

“Coming in here, we knew they were a good rushing defense,” Brown said. “Despite their record in conference, they’re a really good team.”

Jamar Taylor ran 25 yards for a touchdown, snapping a fourth-quarter tie and helping USF (7-4, 2-4) improve its bowl prospects. Benjamin Williams also scored on a 3-yard run after Dontavia Bogan returned the opening kickoff deep into UConn territory, one of several special teams lapses that hurt the Huskies.

“It’s not too hard to figure out or explain the mistakes or missed opportunities. … We ended up making more mistakes and giving them the short field. We couldn’t gain the short field all evening and because of that, we came out on the disappointing end,” Connecticut coach Randy Edsall said.

USF finished off the Huskies, stopping a potential go-ahead drive in the closing minutes by forcing a fumble by quarterback Tyler Lorenzen.

Lorenzen tied it 10-all late in third quarter with a 43-yard TD pass to Ellis Gaulden on a flea-flicker play. He answered Taylor’s touchdown with a field goal drive that trimmed UConn’s deficit to 17-13, then had UConn (7-4, 3-3) on the move again when Lorenzen fumbled just before his knee touched down after he scrambled for a first down on 4th-and-4 inside the USF 30.

“They were relentless. … I thought they played so hard all the way through,” Bulls coach Jim Leavitt said of his defense.

Brown began the night leading the nation in rushing at 153.70 yards per game, but rarely found much running room against a defense determined to redeem itself after being dominated during a 49-16 loss to Rutgers the previous week.

UConn, coming off a 39-14 rout of Syracuse, didn’t get anything going offensively until late in the second quarter when USF gambled on fourth-and-1 from its own 45 and Matt Grothe was stopped for no gain on a quarterback sneak.

Lorenzen scrambled for 10 yards on third-and-9, Brown bolted 13 yards around right end and Lorenzen converted another third down with a 7-yard completion to Anthony Sherman before the drive stalled at the USF 4 and the Huskies settled for a field goal that trimmed their deficit to 10-3.

Grothe threw his ninth interception in the past four games, costing USF an opportunity to build onto the lead just before the half. UConn pulled even when Jordan Todman took a handoff from Brown on a reverse before flipping the ball back to Lorenzen, who had Gaulden running all alone down the middle of the field.

The pass hung in the air long enough for USF defenders Nate Allen and Tyller Roberts to close in on the receiver, but Gaulden made the catch between them and twisted away from Allen inside the 5.

“At first, I’m like, `Oh, my God. Where’s the ball? When’s it coming down?” Gaulden said. “But it finally came down to my hands and I did my best to get in the end zone.”

Lorenzen, playing his second game since returning from a broken foot that sidelined him for four games, completed 10 of 24 passes for 119 yards and no interceptions.

Grothe, playing on a sore left ankle that limited his practicing time during the week, was 9-of-18 for 124 yards. He also led USF with 51 yards rushing on five attempts.
