KENT, Ohio (AP) -Chandler Harnish threw two touchdowns passes and ran for two more scores as Northern Illinois took a 42-14 Mid-American Conference victory over Kent State on Tuesday night.

Craig Rusch also scored for NIU (6-5, 5-3), pulling the Huskies to a 21-point lead by recovering a fumble for 60 yards with about 8 minutes left in the third quarter. Chad Spann added a 26-yard run late in the third quarter to give the Huskies a 35-14 lead.

The Huskies took a 14-0 lead with Harnish’s 2-yard pass to Reed Cunningham in the first quarter and his 3-yard run in the second. His 31-yard run in the third made it 21-7 and a 17-yard pass to Matt Simon ended the scoring with about 9 minutes left.

Leneric Muldrow of the Golden Flashes (3-8, 2-5) scored on a 5-yard run with 4:22 left in the half to bring it to 14-7, and Eugene Jarvis kept it to 28-14 with a 2-yard run with 3:15 left in the third quarter.

Harnish rushed for 117 yards and passed for 173. Kent’s Julian Edelman passed for 126 yards and had 108 yards rushing.

Northern Illinois had 397 offensive yards to Kent’s 253 and four sacks for 13 yards, to Kent’s no sacks.

Josh Howard scored 21 points, and Jason Terry added 15 points off the bench for the Mavericks, who are 9-0 all-time against Charlotte. Jason Kidd had 10 assists and two points, and Erick Dampier had 11 rebounds and six points for Dallas, which has won two in a row after a five-game skid. D.J. Rasho Nesterovic had 21 points, while Troy Murphy posted 10 points and a season-high 19 rebounds in the victory. Joe Johnson had a team-high 25 points to go with seven rebounds for the Hawks, who have lost four straight since winning six in a row to start the season. Johnson shot 5-of-7 from three-point range, while the rest of the team could only manage a 2-for-12 mark. Marvin Williams scored 14, and Mike Bibby and Maurice Evans each added 13 points in the loss.

Orlando, FL - Hedo Turkoglu scored 16 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, pacing the surging Magic to a 103-90 victory over the Toronto Raptors. Jameer Nelson and Rashard Lewis also finished with 22 points for Orlando, winners in eight of its last nine games. Lewis also had eight rebounds and five steals. Dwight Howard chipped in 18 points and nine rebounds before fouling out. J.J. Redick had 10 points in his first career start. Chris Bosh had a fabulous night, recording 40 points and 18 rebounds on 14-of-19 shooting, but the Raptors lost for the third time in four games. Jermaine O’Neal had 16 points and 10 rebounds, while Will Solomon scored 10 in defeat. Solomon also accounted for seven of Toronto’s 24 turnovers.

Washington, DC - Dwyane Wade scored 19 points and doled out 10 assists to lead the Miami Heat in a 94-87 victory over the Washington Wizards. Mario Chalmers added 15 points and six helpers for the Heat, who have alternated wins and losses for the last seven games. Shawn Marion and Udonis Haslem scored 12 points apiece in the win. Antawn Jamison had 25 points and 12 boards for the Wizards, who have dropped two straight since their lone win of the season. Caron Butler gave 21 and 12 in defeat.

Boston, MA - Paul Pierce scored 22 points and hauled in eight rebounds to lead the Kevin Garnett-less Celtics in a 110-101 victory over the Knicks. Garnett sat out after being suspended for hitting Milwaukee’s Andrew Bogut during Boston’s 102-97 overtime win on Saturday. The one-game suspension cost Garnett upwards of $200,000. Brian Scalabrine started in his place and had eight points, including a clutch three-pointer down the stretch. Kendrick Perkins had 16 points for the Celtics, who have won two in a row and eight of nine overall. Rajon Rondo and Ray Allen scored 15 points each in the win. East Rutherford, NJ - LeBron James scored 31 points and grabbed eight rebounds, as the Cleveland Cavaliers put on a three-point show to down the New Jersey Nets, 106-82. James shot only 1-of-4 from beyond the arc, but Delonte West and Mo Williams shot a combined 7-of-8 from long distance for the Cavs, who have won eight straight games. Cleveland made 10-of-17 three-pointers, and West had 16 points, while Williams posted 16 points and six assists in the win. Devin Harris scored a team-high 23 points for the Nets, who had won their previous two games. Oakland, CA - Anthony Morrow scored 25 points, including the three game-clinching free throws in the final seconds, to give the Golden State Warriors a 111-106 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers. Stephen Jackson had 20 points and eight assists for the Warriors, who won two straight for the first time this season. Corey Maggette also had 20 points in the win. Greg Oden poured in a career-high 22 points and 10 grabbed boards for the Blazers, who have dropped two of three. Brandon Roy totaled 22 points and nine helpers, while Travis Outlaw and Rudy Fernandez had 13 points and seven rebounds apiece.

Los Angeles, CA - Pau Gasol scored a season-high 34 points as the Lakers bounced back from their first loss of the season with a 116-109 win over the Chicago Bulls. Kobe Bryant added 21 points and Andrew Bynum posted 18 points and nine rebounds on a milestone night for the center, as Los Angeles moved to 8-1 on the season with its lone loss coming Friday night, 106-95, at home against Detroit. With his nine rebounds, Bynum reached 1,000 boards for his career. He became the eighth-youngest player in NBA history to reach the plateau, doing it at 21 years and 22 days of age. Rookie Derrick Rose had 25 points and nine assists, and Ben Gordon ended with 23 points, but went just 6-of-22 from the field, as the Bulls remained winless on the road after four games.

Chapel Hill, NC - Deon Thompson had his way in the post while logging 20 points and nine rebounds in top-ranked North Carolina’s 77-58 drubbing of a rebuilding Kentucky Wildcats club in a game featuring college basketball’s two winningest programs. Wayne Ellington notched 16 points and Ed Davis added nine points and 10 boards for North Carolina (2-0), which upended a scrappy Penn squad in its season opener on Saturday. Ty Lawson shot just 3-of-15 from the floor but finished with nine assists and 11 points for the Tar Heels, who once again won by double-digits despite playing without senior forward Tyler Hansbrough. Patrick Patterson hit 8- of-11 from the field and notched 19 points and 11 rebounds for Kentucky (0-2), which surprisingly dropped its season opener to VMI last Friday. Jodie Meeks also scored 19 points but made 5-of-20 from the field, and Ramon Harris — 15 points — was the only other Wildcat with more than three points.

Austin, TX - Damion James notched a game-high 16 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the seventh-ranked Texas Longhorns cruised to a 76-51 victory over the Tulane Green Wave. A.J. Abrams netted 15 points while Justin Mason handed out seven assists to go with seven points for Texas (2-0), which rolled to a 68-38 victory over Stetson on Friday to begin its campaign. Connor Atchley scored 12 and Gary Johnson 11 in the win. The Longhorns dominated in all facets of the game with 39 points off turnovers and 17 fastbreak points while outscoring Tulane in the paint, 46-20. Kevin Sims led the way with 11 points for Tulane (1-1), which won its opener at home over McNeese State by a 68-62 final. Asim McQueen logged 11 rebounds and nine points in the loss. Tulane, which survived 17 turnovers in its season opener, had 25 turnovers Tuesday and shot just 31 percent (18-for-58) from the floor.

West Lafayette, IN - E’Twaun Moore netted 14 points and grabbed seven rebounds as the No. 11 Purdue Boilermakers routed Loyola- Chicago, 78-46, in the north regional finals of the NIT Season Tip-Off at Mackey Arena. With the win, Purdue advances to the semifinal round of the tournament and will face the east regional champion at Madison Square Garden in New York City on November 26th. Marcus Green notched a double-double with 12 points and 10 boards while Robbie Hummel had 13 points for the Boilermakers (3-0), who are the top seed in this 16-team tournament and scored an opening round victory over Eastern Michigan Monday. Keaton Grant and Nemanja Calasan each logged 11 points in the win. Justin Cerasoli paced the Ramblers with 14 points and four steals for Loyola- Chicago (1-2), which is seeded 10th in this event, but upended Georgia, 74-53, Monday. It was the program’s first win over an SEC team since 1964, as the Ramblers rebounded nicely from an 86-79 loss to Rockhurst in their season opener on Friday. J.R. Blount, who donated 58 points over the Ramblers’ first two games, was 0- for-6 from the floor and had just three points.

Norman, OK - Blake Griffin scored 25 points and raked in a career-high 21 rebounds, as 12th-ranked Oklahoma held off No. 21 Davidson, 82-78, in the second round of the NIT Season Tip-Off, despite a career- high 44 points from Wildcats star Stephen Curry. Curry, the son of former NBA star Dell Curry who burst onto the national scene in March with his incredible performance in leading Davidson to the Elite Eight, powered the Wildcats offense. He struggled at times from the field, and finished 12- of-29 overall, including 6-of-15 from beyond the arc, but he sank all 14 free throws he attempted. He was outlasted by Griffin, though, who made 7-of-11 from the field and 11- of-12 at the charity stripe for the Sooners (3-0), who will UAB next Wednesday at Madison Square Garden in the semifinals of the tourney. Willie Warren scored 20 points, and Taylor Griffin had 16 points and six boards for Oklahoma, which saw a 21-point second-half lead whittled to three in the final minute. Andrew Lovedale scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for Davidson (2-1), which opened the season in the Associated Press Top 25 for the first time since the 1969-70 season.

Knoxville, TN - Brian Williams hit 8-of-10 from the floor while recording a career-high 21 points and 12 rebounds as the 14th-ranked Tennessee Volunteers cruised to a 91-64 victory over Tennessee-Martin. The blowout was Tennessee’s 34th straight win at Thompson-Boling Arena, a new school record. Tyler Smith contributed 19 points, while J.P. Prince and Wayne Chism added 11 points for the Vols (2-0), who had opened their 100th season of basketball with a strong, 114-74 victory over Chattanooga. Chism also pulled down 10 rebounds. The duo of Lester Hudson and Marquis Weddle paced the Skyhawks (1-1) with 20 and 17 points, respectively, but the pair shot a combined 12-of-38 from the floor.

San Diego, CA - James Harden scored 18 and hit the go-ahead three-pointer with 4 1/2 minutes remaining to boost 15th-ranked Arizona State to a 59-52 win over San Diego State. Ty Abbott added 13 points and eight rebounds for the Sun Devils (2-0), who were coming off an 80-64 win over Mississippi Valley State. Rihards Kuksiks tallied 10 points in the win as Arizona State shot 57 percent from the field. That included a 9-of-13 clip in the second half. Kyle Spain scored 17 and Billy White added 12 for the Aztecs (1-1), who beat UC-San Diego in their season-opener on Saturday.

Los Angeles, CA - Taj Gibson totaled 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead No. 19 Southern California to a 73-60 victory over New Mexico State at Galen Center. Dwight Lewis poured in 16 points for Southern California (2-0), which opened its 2008-09 season with a 78-55 win over UC- Irvine and will now face Seton Hall on Thursday. Daniel Hackett scored 10 points and DeMar DeRozan added seven points in the win. Jahmar Young led the way for New Mexico State (1-1) with 16 points and seven rebounds. Troy Gillenwater chipped in 15 points for the Aggies, who will host Pepperdine on Friday. Jonathan Gibson added 11 points in the loss.

Lawrence, KS - Sherron Collins scored a career-high 25 points to lead the 24th-ranked Kansas Jayhawks in an 85-45 rout of the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles at Allen Fieldhouse. Cole Aldrich added 12 points for the Jayhawks (2-0), who were coming off a 71-56 victory over UMKC on Sunday. Marcus Morris hauled in 10 rebounds to go with his five points. Reed Baker totaled 11 points for the Eagles (0-1), who went 10-21 overall and 6-10 in the Atlantic Sun Conference last season, their first at the Division I level.

Madison, WI - Jon Leuer scored 19 points on 8-of-10 shooting, and 25th-ranked Wisconsin rolled to an easy 88-58 win over SIU-Edwardsville. Marcus Landry had 15 points, five rebounds, and five blocked shots for the Badgers (2-0), who rolled to a blowout after edging out Long Beach State 68-61 in the season-opener. Jason Bohannon scored 14 points on 5-of-7 shooting, and Trevon Hughes added 11 points for Wisconsin. Barry Wellington scored 15 points to lead the Cougars (1-3), who were coming off the first win over a Division I program in school history, an 83-72 triumph over Western Michigan. Aaron Garriott scored 11 points, and Nikola Bundalo had 10 points and six rebounds for SIU-Edwardsville, which is in the transition process into becoming a Division I program.

Pittsburgh, PA - Marek Zidlicky netted the game-winning shootout tally and Niklas Backstrom made 24 saves while halting each of Pittsburgh’s three shootout attempts as the Minnesota Wild topped the Penguins, 2-1, at Mellon Arena. Mikko Koivu was credited with Minnesota’s regulation goal and helped the Wild to their third straight win and fourth in their last five contests. Matt Cooke scored the lone goal for the Penguins, who had their six-game winning streak snapped and lost for the first time this month.

Final Score: Carolina 2, Montreal 1

Raleigh, NC - Ray Whitney’s power-play goal in the third period proved to be the game-winner, and Cam Ward was strong with 28 saves, as the Carolina Hurricanes defeated the Montreal Canadiens, 2-1, at RBC Center. Sergei Samsonov also scored for Carolina, which has won two straight following a three-game skid. The Hurricanes remain at home for two more contests in this four-game homestand which will continue on Friday against Phoenix. Robert Lang scored the only goal for Montreal, which has dropped three of its last four games. Carey Price was tremendous between the pipes with 46 saves in defeat.

Final Score: Edmonton 7, Columbus 2

Columbus, OH - Dwayne Roloson made 37 saves and the Edmonton Oilers exploded with four goals in the third period in their 7-2 thumping of the Columbus Blue Jackets. Shawn Horcoff had a goal and two assists, while Andrew Cogliano, Sheldon Souray, Lubomir Visnovsky and Tom Gilbert each scored and added a helper for Edmonton, which came in having four combined goals during its recent three-game slide. Pascal Leclaire allowed all seven goals on a mere 19 shots for Columbus, which has dropped three of four. Kristin Huselius and Rick Nash each recorded a goal in the loss.

Final Score: Florida 4, Tampa Bay 3 (SO)

Tampa, FL - Nathan Horton was credited with the game-winning tally in the shootout and the Florida Panthers edged instate rival Tampa Bay, 4-3, at St. Pete Times Forum. Bryan McCabe scored twice and David Booth also tallied in regulation for the Panthers, who have won three of their last four games overall. Tomas Vokoun allowed three goals on 52 shots in the win. Vokoun made 15 saves in the first period and 20 more in the second. Radim Vrbata, Steve Eminger and Evgeny Artyukhin scored for the Lightning, who have lost in a shootout in both of their first two games under interim head coach Rick Tocchet. Barry Melrose, a former coach turned hockey television personality for over a decade, returned to the bench this season but was fired on Friday after a 5-7-4 start. Mike Smith finished with 33 saves for Tampa Bay, which fell to 2-4-3 in November.

Final Score: Chicago 3, Phoenix 2 (SO)

Glendale, AZ - Jonathan Toews and Patrick Sharp both lit the lamp in the shootout, and the Chicago Blackhawks defeated the Phoenix Coyotes, 3-2. Toews was able to beat Ilya Bryzgalov through the legs in the shootout, and Sharp followed with a shot that beat the goaltender stick side. Nikolai Khabibulin saved both Phoenix attempts, including a great glove save off Peter Mueller to secure the win. Kris Versteeg and Sharp scored the goals in regulation for the Blackhawks, who snapped a three-game losing streak by starting their six-game road trip with a win. Nikolai Khabibulin stopped 36-of-38 shots for the win. Zbynek Michalek and Shane Doan both scored for the Coyotes, who rallied from a 2-0 deficit but lost their third straight game. Bryzgalov allowed two goals on 40 shots in the loss.

Final Score: Calgary 4, Colorado 1

Calgary, AB - Adrian Aucoin and Rene Bourque scored while Miikka Kiprusoff made 22 saves, as the Calgary Flames defeated the Colorado Avalanche, 4-1, in the opener of a home-and-home set at Saddledome. Jarome Iginla and David Moss also scored for the inconsistent Flames, who are now 3-5 since a six-game win streak. These two teams will meet in Denver on Thursday. Peter Budaj was stellar with 47 saves for the Avalanche, who saw their three-game win streak halted. Marek Svatos scored the only goal in the loss.
