Joan Guzman remained undefeated

Atlantic City, NJ  - Joan Guzman retained his WBO super featherweight title with a 12-round unanimous decision over Humberto Soto at the Borgata Hotel Casino.

Guzman (28-0) was able to use his speed and lightning-quick footwork to keep Soto (43-6-2) at bay most of the fight and win by a 118-110 count from one judge and 117-111 on the two other scorecards.

Guzman, originally from the Dominican Republic and now living in Brooklyn, New York, was defending his belt for the second time. He won it with a split decision over Jorge Rodrigo Barrios in September of 2006 before earning a unanimous decision over Antonio Davis last December.

Soto, from Tijuana, Mexico, had his 20-bout winning streak broken.

In the ninth round, Guzman went to the canvas, but not from a Soto punch. Instead, he tripped on the shoes of the challenger in the final seconds of the round.

Guzman, already ahead by a wide margin on the scorecards, was never in trouble over the final three rounds.
