Habs beat Sabres with 3-goal 2nd period (AP)

The Montreal Canadiens feel they have plenty of room for improvement despite a victorious start to the longest homestand in their 100 years of existence. Andrei Markov scored Montreal’s third goal of the second period to send the Canadiens to a 3-2 win over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday night. Andrei Kostitsyn and Steve Begin also scored in the middle period for Montreal.


Pavelski helps Sharks win 7th straight (AP)

The San Jose Sharks are on a long winning streak. The Phoenix Coyotes are on the verge of a goalie controversy. Joe Pavelski scored twice, including the go-ahead goal with 8:37 remaining, and the Sharks rallied from an early two-goal deficit to beat the Coyotes 3-2 Saturday night for their seventh straight win.

Bruins captain Zdeno Chara believes his team made a major statement against the defending Stanley Cup champions. “We can beat anybody in this league and we can play against anybody, obviously,” Chara said after Boston beat the Detroit Red Wings 4-1 on Saturday night for its ninth straight home win. “We’ve got to keep going and we’ve got to push forward,” Chara said.

Daymond Langkow and the Calgary Flames cut the Vancouver Canucks’ division lead to just a point with a home-and-home sweep. Langkow scored the pivotal first goal in the Flames’ 3-1 victory over the Canucks on Saturday night, deflecting Dion Phaneuf’s rising snap shot from the blue line past rookie goalie Cory Schneider on a power play late in the second period.
