Pang: Dal/Det Gm. 5 Preview
The Stars may have avoided being swept, but Darren Pang says it’s only a matter of time until the Red Wings put them away.

Flyers avoid Pens’ bid to sweep

Pens’ Talbot may not stay on Staal line (AP)
The Pittsburgh Penguins got back into a game that looked hopelessly lost by replacing the more physical Jarkko Ruutu with the faster Max Talbot at center Jordan Staal’s line. Staal, adjusting on the fly to a new linemate, scored twice in 11 minutes of the third period as the Penguins cut a three-goal deficit to one goal before losing 4-2 in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference finals Thursday night.

Red Wings C Franzen out for Game 5 (AP)
NHL playoff goal-scoring leader Johan Franzen will miss his fourth straight game when the Red Wings face Dallas in Game 5 of the Western Conference finals Saturday. Detroit general manager Ken Holland says Franzen has been cleared for light workouts. But Holland says the center would need to practice with the team for a few days before returning to the lineup.

Laviolette to return to Carolina bench next season
Peter Laviolette will be back for a fifth season coaching the Carolina Hurricanes. General manager Jim Rutherford said Friday that the team would retain the coach who in 2006 led the Hurricanes to their only Stanley Cup. Speculation swirled for the past month about Laviolette’s future after Carolina missed the playoffs in both seasons after its championship run. Rutherford said Laviolette met this week with owner Peter Karmanos Jr.

Flyers’ Timonen could play; Coburn doubtful
Kimmo Timonen’s return from injury suddenly seems much closer than that of Philadelphia Flyers defense partner Braydon Coburn. The All-Star was all but ruled out for the season a week ago, on the eve of the Eastern Conference finals, when it was revealed he had a blood clot in his left ankle. But after a visit to his doctor Thursday, just hours before the Flyers extended their season with a 4-2 victory over the Pittsburgh Penguins, the prognosis got a whole lot better.
