Pirates end Mets‘ winning streak at 6 (AP)

New York Mets relief pitcher Duaner Sanchez signals to the bench that he is alright after falling down backing up a throw that went wide of third base in the eighth inning of the baseball game against the Pittsburgh Pirates in Pittsburgh, Monday, Aug. 18, 2008. The Pirates won 5-2.

Steve Pearce was coming to bat against the New York Mets with the bases loaded in a tie game, and Pittsburgh teammate Jack Wilson wanted to have a word with the rookie. “I reminded him he’s been in that situation before,” Wilson said. “It’s important for young guys to know they can come up big in those situations.” Pearce again delivered against the Mets, hitting a go-ahead single in the eighth…

Curt Schilling says he’s leaning “very heavily” toward retirement and is waiting until spring training approaches to see if he wants to try to pitch again. The Boston Red Sox right-hander, who underwent season-ending shoulder surgery on June 23, said in his most recent blog entry that his shoulder “is getting better fast” and “I’ve still got a rather lengthy amount of time before I decide…

Milwaukee Brewers' CC Sabathia points after assisting in turning a double play against the Houston Astros in the seventh inning of a baseball game Monday, Aug. 18, 2008, in Milwaukee.

CC Sabathia often talks about how much he likes to hit. He just hadn’t done much at the plate with the Milwaukee Brewers until Monday night. Sabathia improved his perfect record with the Brewers, pitching another complete game in a 9-3 victory over the Houston Astros. He also hit a two-run single in a five-run fourth inning.

Source: Padres to deal Maddux to Dodgers (AP)
Greg Maddux is headed back to the Los Angeles Dodgers. San Diego and Los Angeles agreed to a trade that puts the 353-game winner in a pennant race again, according to a person familiar with the deal who spoke on condition of anonymity Monday night because no announcement had been made. It was unclear what the last-place Padres would receive in return for the 42-year-old Maddux, who will join a…

Upton’s gaffe puts damper on Rays’ win (AP)

Los Angeles Angels' Garret Anderson races home to score on a sixth-inning sacrifice fly by Juan Rivera off Tampa Bay Rays pitcher Andy Sonnanstine during a baseball game Monday Aug. 18, 2008 in St. Petersburg, Fla. Anderson extended his hitting streak to 21 games, but the Rays won 6-4.

B.J. Upton slipped away from Tropicana Field without speaking to reporters, leaving others to answer questions about another baserunning gaffe that overshadowed a big Tampa Bay victory. The first-place Rays beat the Los Angeles Angels 6-4 Monday night, but the postgame buzz was more about Upton getting caught jogging on the bases again instead of the AL East leaders improving to 5-2 against the…
