Rangers forward Sean Avery was released from the hospital Sunday morning, five days after suffering a season-ending spleen injury in a playoff game. Avery was in intensive care at St. Vincent’s Medical Center from the time he was admitted Tuesday night, shortly after New York’s Game 3 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins, until Saturday because of a lacerated spleen, Rangers spokesman John Rosasco said.

Pittsburgh Penguins' Ryan Malone, top, reacts after getting a high stick across the face by New York Rangers' Chris Drury, bottom, in the third period of Game 5 of an Eastern Conference semifinal playoff hockey series in Pittsburgh, Sunday, May 4, 2008. The four minute penalty went through the end of the third period and into overtime where the Penguins went on to win 3-2, and take the series four games to one.

So much for the talk a team as young as the Pittsburgh Penguins couldn’t advance this far in the playoffs. So much for the speculation Marian Hossa couldn’t score big postseason goals. So much for the New York Rangers, too, whose decided edge in experience meant nothing in a five-game series in which the Penguins’ superior talent repeatedly made the difference.

Jagr says he has no plans to retire (AP)
Maybe it was Jaromir Jagr’s last game with the New York Rangers. It almost certainly wasn’t Jagr’s last hockey game. Jagr, a five-time NHL scoring champion, is facing an uncertain future following the Rangers’ season-ending 3-2 overtime loss to Pittsburgh on Sunday in Game 5 of their second-round playoff series.

The Pens topped the Rangers in OT to reach the Eastern finals, and Marian Hossa proved to be the difference, Inside Hockey says.

Flyers pressure Habs in big win
The Flyers fell behind early to the Habs. But a balanced attack helped Philly advance to the East Finals, Brad Kurtzberg says.

In three weeks, Philadelphia will mark 25 empty years without a championship. That’s a demoralizing 0-for-Flyers, Phillies, Eagles and 76ers. Not since May 31, 1983, when the 76ers capped a four-game sweep of the Los Angeles Lakers with a 115-108 victory have any of the four major professional teams been able to celebrate a title and throw a parade.

Inside Hockey on Stars-Sharks
The Stars eliminated the Sharks on Brenden Morrow’s goal in the 4th OT. It was a playoff game for the ages, Inside Hockey says.
