Final Score: (11) Texas 72, (3) Kansas 69
Austin, TX - A.J. Abrams had 14 points, including a pair of key free throws down the stretch, to help 11th-ranked Texas knock off No. 3 Kansas, 72-69, in a battle of Big 12 powerhouses at Erwin Center. Connor Atchley had 16 points on 6-of-6 shooting - 4-for-4 from three-point range - and Damion James rode a monster second half to a 14-point, 13-rebound night as the Longhorns (20-4, 7-2 Big 12) held off a late Kansas surge in the first matchup between the conference rivals since KU’s 88-84 victory in last March’s Big 12 Tournament championship game. Darrell Arthur led the Jayhawks (23-2, 8-2) with 22 points and six rebounds, while Mario Chalmers and Darnell Jackson dropped 13 apiece. Kansas shot just 10-for-25 in the second half, though, and fell for the second time in the past five games following a 20-0 start to the season.
Final Score: (8) Georgetown 55, Villanova 53
Washington, DC - Jonathan Wallace ended a bruising Big East battle with two free throws after a questionable foul call 75 feet from the basket with 0.1 ticks to play, and eighth-ranked Georgetown dealt a major blow to Villanova’s at-large chances with a 55-53 win at the Verizon Center. A game that featured 38 fouls will best be remembered by a slight bump and a quick whistle with the game seemingly headed for overtime. Scottie Reynolds turned the corner toward the baseline, but the ball was knocked free on that final possession, and Wallace came out with the ball and appeared to be dribbling to an overtime. A foul was called and the guard made both free throws for the final margin. Georgetown (20-3, 10-2 Big East) responded from a loss at Louisville and extended its home winning streak to 18 games. Wallace scored 15, Roy Hibbert added 13 and DaJuan Summers posted 12 points and eight rebounds for the Hoyas. Reynolds led all scorers with 24 points and Dante Cunningham added nine for the Wildcats (14-9, 4-7), who had won their previous six meetings with the Hoyas in Washington, DC.
Final Score: (25) St. Mary’s-CA 54, Santa Clara 50
Santa Clara, CA - Tron Smith had 15 points to help 25th- ranked St. Mary’s-CA hold off Santa Clara, 54-50, at the Leavey Center. Diamon Simpson added 12 points and seven rebounds while Patrick Mills donated nine points for the Gaels (21-3, 8-1 WCC), who won their fourth straight game. John Bryant had 21 points and 12 rebounds while Brody Angley donated 11 points and seven boards for the Broncos (12-11, 4-4), who have dropped two of their last three.
