Werth’s 4 RBIs lift Phils by Braves 5-4 (AP)

Jayson Werth almost ruined a strong hitting performance with an untimely miscue in the field. Brad Lidge bailed him out. Werth drove in four runs, Kyle Kendrick pitched six effective innings and the Philadelphia Phillies beat the Atlanta Braves 5-4 on Tuesday night. Kendrick (3-2) shook off a shaky first inning and allowed three runs and six hits.

Struggling to find his command, Randy Johnson needed help for his 287th career victory. Stephen Drew supplied it. Backed by Drew’s three-run homer, Johnson went five shaky innings and the Arizona Diamondbacks beat Colorado 8-4 on Tuesday night. The Big Unit (3-1) gave up four runs and nine hits, striking out four and walking none.


Sudden impatience sees slumping vets cut quickly
Jacque Jones spent Monday getting hitting tips from Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn, and although the veteran outfielder relishes his time at home in San Diego, it sure feels strange when everyone else is playing baseball. Shawn Estes had some serious doubts if he was ever going to get his 100th career victory. Khalil Greene hit a three-run homer to help Estes reach that milestone and win his first game since 2005 with the San Diego Padres‘ 4-3 victory over the Chicago Cubs on Tuesday night. Estes pitched 5 1-3 innings and the Padresbullpen secured the win with 3 2-3 innings of hitless relief.
