Yanks pick up option on Abreu

Bronx, NYÂ - The New York Yankees exercised the contract option on outfielder Bobby Abreu on Friday, keeping him with the team for one more season.
In his first full season with the Yankees this past year, the rightfielder hit .283 with 16 homers, 101 RBI and 123 runs scored. In 58 games after being acquired from the Philadelphia Phillies during the 2006 season, he hit seven homers, drove in 42 runs and scored 37 times for the Yankees.
“Bobby Abreu possesses a unique skill set and has proven to be a durable and reliable asset to this club,” said Yankees Senior Vice President and General Manager Brian Cashman. “Consistency has been a hallmark throughout his career, and we are excited to work with him again as we look forward to the 2008 season.”
Since entering the league in 1996, Abreu, 33, is a career .300 hitter with 221 homers, 984 RBI and 1,074 runs scored.
